The Nervous System
The nerves of the body are organised into two main systems. The first is the central nervous system, which is the control centre for the entire nervous system and consists of the brain and spinal cord.

Our body functions are carried out by the peripheral nervous system. This consists of 31 sets of nerves that run out from the spinal cord.
These nerves monitor the state of our body and relay information to the brain, which gives instructions or adjustments to keep the system balanced.
Our sensory organs, i.e. touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing are also part of the nervous system. Times of shock, stress and nervous strain in our lives can all negatively affect this system, causing problems such as insomnia, anxiety and depression.
